Define - Cause and Effect Diagram

The Managing Director of Zero Carbon Engineering was involved in determining
why  rapid corrosion was being experienced in dry air coolers.  To start the process a cause and effect (or fishbone or Ishikawa diagram) to the right was used to  define the inputs that could give rise to the rapid corrosion.

The fishbone diagram identifies many possible causes for an effect or problem. It can be used to structure a brainstorming session. It immediately sorts ideas into useful categories.

It was developed by Kaoru Ishikawa, Professor at the Faculty of Engineering at The University of Tokyo c.1968 to investigate that show the causes of a specific event.

It is has several variants depending on its application:-

In Manufacturing it is known as the 6 Ms

  • Machine (equipment, technology)
  • Method (process)
  • Material (includes raw material, consumables, and information)
  • Man / mind power (physical or knowledge work, includes: kaizens, suggestions)
  • Measurement (inspection)
  • Mother Nature (environment)

In Product Marketing it is known as the 8 Ps:                                                   In service industries it is know as  4S's:-

  • Product (or service)                                                                                - Surroundings
  • Price                                                                                                          - Suppliers
  • Promotion                                                                                                - Systems
  • Place                                                                                                          - Skills
